On Saturday morning I saw one or two white-throated swifts flying high over my home at Ryder lake. The white throat and larger size was distinct compared to the vaux's swifts it was flying with. It was a very lows flock of swifts with only about 2-8 birds visible at one time. Good birding, Denis

Denis, super sighting! I smiled broadly when I read your report for two reasons; one, being that you had such good looks at a rare bird for here. The second reason is that I removed my sighting of one after stroking my imaginary beard and assessing my sighting from a few years back. I realized that I could not be sure if what I saw was indeed a White-throated Swift or just a Vaux's with a bit of albinoism or something. I decided that while unlikely, I couldnt be sure (I did not have the benefit of seeing it with other swifts) so had to remove it. The real kicker is that I thought to myself that someone is going to get a definitive look at one soon after I do this and make me have to add it back. Way to go again on a great find!!!

This is very interesting. Gord - do you know what year you saw them? We're sure we saw some flying over Black Mountain in West Van with a group of Black Swifts in April, 2007. But this was so unlikely we didn't dare tell anyone! Didn't have any photos, just are own fleeting looks.

Bryan and Janet, that sighting was in June but again, Im not sure about it due to poor looks so take it with a grain of salt. But with a better look like you had, nothing to be shy about if you were able to see enough (tough on swifts!). Not sure when they arrive in the OK and if April is prime migration period or not. Certainly a tantalizing sighting especially for those who monitor things out on the coast.
