I was caught off guard by my first rufous hummingbird of the season yesterday (March 15). It was buzzing around the rosebush just outside our window where we usually hang our feeder, wondering where it was!
By referring to my notes from the last year, they are right on time, however their nectar sources seem to be flowering a week or two later this year, as I have written that at this time last year indian plum was nearly out of flower and salmonberry was in full bloom.
I've also heard that the hummers are more in tune to the abundance of small insects than the flowering of their favourite nectar sources.
Anyway, first hummer of the year for me, better get those feeders up!

Finally - first sighting of a hummingbird over here in Harrison Mills ;D One of my neighbours just called to say she'd had a female at her feeder. Unusual that the first was a female, I thought the males were supposed to show up first! Anyway, just happy they've finally found us. Last year the first sighting was on the 11th of March, this year it's the 22cd. Kathy
