I was looking through some older pictures that I took. I came across the following two pictures. They were taken on a hike on Windy Joe in Manning Park. The first one I am very sure that it is a Sooty Grouse but the second picture I am not sure. The second one was way on the top of the mountain. They both look different. First Grouse Second Grouse

Hi Bundy, I would say they're both Sooty's, however bird one is still in juvenile plumage. The relatively short tail and still undeveloped beak are the clues. I suspect bird two is also an immature but probably a couple of weeks older. Looks like they allowed a nice close approach!

Thanks Murray that makes sense. I got fairly close to both of them. I zoomed in on the photos and I had a basic zoom camera at the time, 12x I believe.
What's weird is that as I was looking through the photos, on the same hike there are pictures of a small grouse. It looked like it would be a few weeks old. The picture was taken on the same hike in mid July. I guess his/her mother laid her eggs pretty late.
