Spent a bit of time around the Greendale area last two days. Scoped out the fields but no slaty-backed gull. Found two western gulls in one field! Also came across a largish flock of mew gulls whom I havnt seen before, so it seems there could be a fair amount of movement among the flocks, OR and more (or just as) likely with all the fields in the area, you cant possibly see all that's there at one time.
This evening coming home from work, I checked the flock at Evans Rd. No dark backed gulls, but the opposite. A 1st year glaucous gull! Not the same bird from the Banford Rd area. Very white, but had more pattern in back and wings. Pink bill with black tip, dark eye, appropriate head shape. Flew as I was digging out the camera, so I got to see wingtips really well too as a trade for no picture . This has been a great field!
Yesterday while out in Abbotsford I stopped for lunch pulled off at Clayburn (?) conveniently near a large flock of gulls. I checked it over, another western and a real white gull sleeping! I thought glaucous, but then it stuck its head out and it had a yellow bill (no red dot that I could see) It also had a roundy head, smaller bill and was too 'delicate' looking for glaucous gull anyway. The best guess at shape was when it flew. Slim and more dainty like a Thayer's if I had to guess. Complete albino! Didnt get any good pictures, but forgot to check the camera!
Anyone up for gulling in the 'slaty-backed' area will have lots of gulls to look at. There's been thousands last few days. I bet the slaty is still around. ;D
