Was around Evans Rd and out in East Chilliwack yesterday and things were much different.
I suspect the change in weather may have changed their patterens as the areas that have had gulls for the last month had none.
The gull flocks I see in the Evans Rd area seem to appear in the morning and leave in the evening in a SW direction leading me to believe they are roosting in the Vedder Canal possibly. I dont know if they're visiting the dump very much if at all. This is all theory.
The East Chilliwack action originates from the dump and these birds seem to roost on Cultus Lake at night. More theory. I was there yesterday dropping off recycling and there was thousands there and lots scattered widly on the fields but no sustained numbers like a few days ago.
It is certainly possible they move around during the day and there is no way to tell who's coming and leaving the Evans/Greendale areas. I expect all gulls in Chilliwack show up at the dump at one time or another, especially when the fields freeze.
Anyway, back to stuff you can see. On my way to work, Evans Rd had about 200 gulls this morning, with more coming in from the west and, Im almost embarassed to mention, a perfect western gull with them. Im starting to sound like a story teller!! It was close to the road and I checked it with the binoculars and that's what it was as nothing indicated hybrid
-White head and neck
-Peaked head
-Dark back
-Lots of black on the top of the wingtips when it flew.
I need a picture of these western gulls I keep talking about. They've been avoiding me so far while the even more rare gulls have cooperated nicely.
