Yesterday a photo of the Snow Bunting was featured at the Village of Harrison Hot Springs Park and Recreation Commission Meeting. I included it in a package of the beach front park photos to remind the Commission and thereby the Council what an important birding area HHS is and how we must always strive to protect the habitat.
Yes, I finally saw and photographed the bird. When it is showing itself, it just poses by the quarter hour. Not even dog walkers scare it away.
It seems to be enjoying the new hydro-seeded area. It eats both seeds and newly emerging shoots. Do hope it is not eating the shredded paper that is designed to secure the seed to the sand. In the long run, it is hoped the grass mix will stabilize the beach and cut down blowing sand.
I also pointed out that birds such as the Snow Bunting attract many visitors to our Village who support our economy. If you come out this Saturday, go to the Harrison Resort and Spa Hotel to view the many decorated Christmas Trees - a contest with about 30 entries that continues into the New Year-, have a special coffee at Miss Margaret's coffee shop while at the hotel and even stay for the town Christmas tree lighting in mid afternoon.
