This morning we had a Northern Pygmy Owl in our front yard - eating a Chestnut Backed Chickadee. Despite the poor Chickadee I was thrilled to see the Pygmy Owl. After finding the one dead in my back yard back in Dec. I was concerned that he might have been the only one about - apparently not.
This afternoon my neighbour came to get me. He and his wife had been watching a bird they couldn't identify over in the developments next door. He described it as Robin sized, a light buffy color all over except for black wings and tail and when it flew white showed on the tail. He and I went back over but of course couldn't find the bird. After much research he and I have decided that he saw a Northern Shrike, probably a first year bird as Sibleys describes a first year as being buffy all over and as not having the black mask that the older birds have and my neighbour didn't notice any mask. Hopefully the bird will stay around and I'll have to expand my walk from Eaglepoint Park up into the developments in hopes of seeing it. Not a pleasant thought as there are now forms for 3 houses started in the develpment.

Pygmy Owl was back in my backyard again this morning. Could hear the Chickadees and looked out and all the Stellar's and Juncos etc. were sitting up in the tops of the crabapple and apple tree and the Owl was sitting in the Cascara looking back at everybody.
