Hi all: Have been following the sightings on the Coast with interest, and was actually able to see one of the reported birds; ( Black Phoebe ), in Richmond, on a recent weekend trip to Vancouver for a 10k race. Sure miss those opportunities to chase rare birds, which occur, with some regularity, on the Coast in the summer/fall.
For those that don't read bcintbird, and may find themselves in the Okanagan, in the near future, here is an update on what is being seen here.
The Lesser Black backed Gull, once again, seems to be pretty regular in Kelowna between Robert Lake, and the local landfill on Glenmore, both in North Kelowna. Also here is a Kulmlien's Gull, which was a lifer for me. Caution- Robert Lake is in the process of freezing/refreezing, so time may be limited to find the LBBG here.
Rough legged Hawk almost seems to be the default hawk here right now. They are quite common, and, on a trip last week to the Waterville Plateau, north east of Wenatchee, they were very common. Also, in this area, I saw hundreds of Horned Larks, and even managed to scare up some Sharp-tailed Grouse.
Back to the Okanagan, yesterday, Russell Cannings found a Long-eared Owl, and a Saw-Whet in a copse on the trees on the dyke north of Road 22 on the west side of the dyke about 200 metres north of the parking area. Earlier, he and I , and Ilya P. spent about an hour looking for Gray Partridge in the White Lake area east of Oliver, without success.
American Tree Sparrow are pretty regular on Black Sage Road, south of the connection with Road 22 in the weedy areas beside the road. Have been keeping an eye out for Gyrfalcon, and Prairie Falcon at the local feedlots, where there are tons of Rock Pigeons and blackbirds, but, so far, no go.
In my backyard, have had some interesting birds- Golden Eagle, Canyon Wren, Great Horned Owl, and Northern Pygmy Owl, Pygmy Nuthatch, White breased Nuthatch, and still looking for Chukar.
Enjoy reading your posts.- still the best birding website in B.C.
