Yesterday evening I stopped by to have a look. There were lots of gulls in the Canal around the Keith Wilson Bridge. They were enjoying the surplus of food offered by the Pink Salmon or their eggs that were drifting free from the gravel. I saw six species; Western Gull, Glaucous-winged Gulls, Herring Gulls, Thayer's Gull, Ring-billed Gulls and Mew Gulls.
The smaller gulls seemed to focus on the eggs and would catch them by plunging into the water almost like a kingfisher.
I saw my first Thayer's Gull of the fall. An adult still in breeding plumage and a fairly petit specimen. The second picture shows it near other gulls to give an idea of size.
A Herring Gull in its third winter plumage. How fierce it looks with the pale eye!
Finally the Western Gull, also in third winter.
Like I said earlier, lots of gulls!!
