Marion spotted a bird at home yesterday, with some chickadees going for our sunflower seeds. It seemed smaller or slimmer to her, and she described dark grey back, white belly and chin and small dark beak. I gave her a few suggestions over the phone and she hit the guide books. Using our Stokes guide, she IDed a White Breasted Nuthatch, female by the sounds of it (little or no difference between hood and back).

A WBNU is noticeably larger than chickadees are. How about a Pygmy Nuthatch? Denis

Denis, a good suggestion and a species not impossible to get here. Now that we're on the topic, I thought I heard a Pygmy Nuthatch on Cheam Ridge earlier this month. It's been years since I last heard them but the bird I heard 'peeping' a few times got my attention. Sadly not enough to say much about it though. Kev and Marion, keep us posted on your backyard's potential newest rarity!
