...at my expense... Last week while in the kitchen, I could hear this strange bird singing in the backyard every few seconds. Nothing like Ive heard before!!!! I peeked out the patio door and sure enough, there was a small, sparrow sized bird in the neighbor's yard at the top branch of a bush about 30 feet away. Many birds like to get up high to sing, and sure enough, this guy stretched his neck up and appeared to sing again. WEIRD song!!!!! My heart's racing a little bit here. I hop the children's gate between the kitchen and living room and run for my binoculars and camera. This has to be something unreal. I deftly maneuver around playing children and their widely and cleverly placed traps of feet-bruisingly-hard-wooden building blocks and Hot Wheels cars and snag my gear out of the cabinet. Im half way back and considering the logistics of my impending return jump over the gate when I hear the bird sing again...about 10 feet away on the TV. Dora the Explorer's friend bird 'Squeaky', or whatever, is making these weird calls. My wife, who has impeccable timing for catching me trying to wear my socks for a second day in a row or on such amusing instances such as this, inquired mildly why am I staring at the TV and looking disappointed while clutching binoculars and camera. It turned out to be a song sparrow by the way. There wasnt anything much out of the ordinary about it either.
