since we moved here from the coast, I have had fun IDing birds, but this bird has had me stumped for a while now. This bird is shaped like a small heron, or perhaps a loon with a bulging neck, but not marked like a American Bittern (no striped breast). We have seen it mostly in the trees around our house It seems to be traveling in pairs. We live within 100 meters of Bell slough and have seen this bird in the water recently. The most significant identifying factor it's call. Its call sounds like an inhaling of the word "shoooop" . Have not seen it at a feeder and it's elusive so a good ID is difficult.
I have researched exhaustively and can't figure out what it is. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi and welcome Tooner! I wonder if it could be a Green Heron as well. Im not sure if the sound is right though for a Green Heron. Excellent description of the sound (yes, I just did it to get an idea of what it sounds like! hehe) but for the idea of Green Heron to work, Id say the call is more of a loud "OW" or "SKOW"
While on the subject I remember as a boy working in the garden. I heard a Green Heron call and I made the call as well once (not hard to mimic, especially if you catch your thumb under a hammer). I didnt see the bird and went back to the weeding only to hear a few seconds later a big ruckus of Robins and House Finches. I looked into our big tree to see a Green Heron sitting in it! I guess the little birds identified (and rightfully so) the small heron to be a threat to nest and young. I was thrilled to have called in a Green Heron. Cool yard bird for us.
Anyway, back to your bird. Let us know what you find out and thanks for sharing.
