We went up to Manning Park with a skiing/boarding trip today. On the road up to the hill we saw this Grouse. I think it is a Franklin's Spruce Grouse because of the white markings up the back, and the markings on the face. I am not sure about the white tip on the end of the tail. We did not get a long look at it but managed to snap this picture. Can anyone help? This was the biggest excitement as far as birds go today.... Thanks

Hi Bill, I agree with your ID. A Spruce Grouse is a good find this time of year. Nice going.

Bill, indeed a nice find.
Did you see any Grey Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers or crows up around there?
Looking for more birds for our monthly challenge. Your "Fool Hen" and Bruce and Joanne's Ruby-crowned Kinglet they photographed are good additions!

The list for the trip is not that long as we had to go home early. Here it is:
Spruce grouse Grey Jay Crow Raven American Dipper (-15 and 'dipping' in the little open water available!!) Mountain Chickadee Red-breasted Nuthatch
Credit to JohnV for the last two
