Brian M and I were debating a hike at Manning or a trip into Vancouver for some birding. We decided with the beautiful clear skies in Chilliwack, it would be worthwhile to get some nice shots in Vancouver!
First Stop, White Rock, where we had to wait for about an hour for the sunrise...it was quite peaceful and serene!
Here I got my first life bird! Long-tailed duck. There were actually about 5 beautiful males. There came in quite close to the rock barrier at the end of the pier.
There were many grebes floating around! Rednecked, Eared, Horned, Western, and when I got home and looked at my pictures, I think I may have a Clark's here...but I'm not sure...it's a bit fuzzy. Any comments?
Western
Clark's It does appear to have much more white on the face.
There were a few people taking pictures on the pier, and one guy told us about Blackie Spit, and the long-billed Curlew that hangs around there, so we headed out that way. As we were driving, the fog became really thick, and unfortunately lasted for the rest of the day throughout all of Vancouver, so my pictures turned out fuzzy! Still an awesome day though!
Marbled Godwit
Long-billed Curlew
In the parking lot at Blackie Spit, there were flocks of small chirping birds, turned out to be American Goldfinch, which I didn't recognize in their non-breeding colours!
Next Stop, T. ferry terminal. Luckily we bumped into another birder who pointed out a couple surf birds in a flock of black turnstones. I'm sure his pictures turned out better than mine as his camera was larger than a telescope!
Life bird, not a clear pic, but good enough for ID purposes
We saw another pair of long-tailed ducks here.
Next stop Iona Jetty. Hundreds of Dunlin along the shore, and we were quite pleased to find about 5 Wilson's Snipe. Quite impossible to capture a picture....those suckers are fast!
Next stop was Reifel. Quite foggy and drizzly at this point. Got a clear view of a brown creeper a couple feet away from me
At the end of the day, we totaled about 60 species...Brian has the list at home. If only we had the weather Chilliwack experience on Saturday! Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine this weekend!!!
