The Harris's Sparrow at my feeder was last seen on Jan 1st, but I haven't had quality time to observe since then, so it may still be around, as it was showing up occasionally everyday from the 24th Dec. to Jan 1st. Three Ringed-necked Pheasants were seen today in Sumas Prairie and a spectacular Merlin on the hunt flying at dizzying speeds!

You can add Red-breasted Nuthatch and Pine Siskin from my yard today. This morning this neat little bird flew into a viburnum bush outside my window and began eating berries. So please add Townsend's Solitaire to the January list also. Townsend's Solitaire becomes another species for count week for the Abbotsford-Mission Christmas Bird Count, and my 91st yard species. Nice photo of the Townsend's Solitaire, Stan. This is my backyard list for January so far (number in brackets is the largest group observed at once). My property is a single lot located adjacent to the Miami River: Green-winged Teal 4 American Wigeon 1 Mallard 30 Hooded Merganser 4 Bald Eagle 1 (eying the mallards for lunch but didn't catch any) Downy Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker 2 Steller's Jay 6 Northwestern Crow 2 Common Raven 1 Black-capped Chickadee 4 Chestnut-backed Chickadee 4 Bushtit 15 (all over the suet feeders) Red-breasted Nuthatch 2 Varied Thrush 6 European Starling 4 Spotted Towhee 4 Song Sparrow 8 Dark-eyed Junco 9 (numbers way down from December when there was 20 to 30 each Project Feeder Watch count) Purple Finch 2 House Finch 4 Pine Siskin 20 (all over the Niger feeder) Evening Grosbeak 8 (love black oil sunflowers) In addition one EASTERN GREY SQUIRREL, a new resident who fell out of the Red Alder when attempting to jump to a Cottonwood tree while carrying a (cone) in its mouth and one DOUGLAS SQUIRREL who peeked at me from the Big-leafed Maple waiting for peanuts when I cleared the snow this morning. Here photo of the Bald Eagle and the Douglas's Squirrel If I include birds seen on walks to the village for coffee, exercise and the mail I can add: Great Blue Heron Wood Duck Lesser Scaup Common Goldeneye Bufflehead Common Merganser American Coot Brown Creeper Winter Wren American Dipper Golden-crowned Kinglets American Robin House sparrow Janne Perrin Harrison Hot Springs

At 2:30 PM with the heavy rain not abating, cabin fever got the better of me so walked Spring Park, the lagoon and lake front. It was worthwhile as I saw a Double-crested Cormorant on the ice in the Miami River at Spring Park, six Trumpeter Swans at the mouth of the River and a lone Glaucous-winged Gull to add to my January list. Walked again today in a driving rain but it was rewarding. At Spring Park a GC Kinglet landed within two inches of my face that I had inserted into the foliage of a WR Cedar. Hard to photograph anything in the rain but I caught the beautiful yellow of its head in this shot: At the mouth of the Miami on the lake the usual male Common Goldeneye and the 2 female Bufflehead were diving. This is the C. Goldeneye: On the ice there today were 2 juvenile Double-crested Cormorants. One spooked into the water but soon returned. They remained there for the 20 minutes I hung around. An American Dipper bobbed and dived just under the bridge that crosses the mouth of the Miami River: I forgot to report the 30 Canada Geese that flew in yesterday about 4 PM. Most were still there today. There were also a gull with dark-tipped wings but it was to far away to say if it was a Mew, a Ring-billed or a California. My best guess is a Mew. A Bald Eagle took a pass at the large flock of Lesser Scaup. That may be why they had panicked earlier when the Glaucous-winged Gull flew over them. Janne Perrin Harrison Hot Springs

Jan. 9th I had a Savannah Sparrow, Northern Shrike, and Slate-colored D.E. Junco in the back yard. I believe the sparrow and junco are returnees from last winter.

Keep them coming! January 2008 tallied 113 species so we have a little ways to go yet to beat the record.
Added a pair of Eurasian Wigeon from Greendale and a Screech-owl from Island 22 earlier in the month (have photos to share when I get a chance!)
I havnt been able to see any Tundra Swans among the few swan flocks Ive investigated. Sure there are some in Kilby area. Bill will no doubt get some new species when he visits Manning later this month (no pressure! ;D )

Yesterday the 14th, two Horned Grebes were on Harrison Lake. A single Bohemian Waxwing flew into the back yard this morning.
