Spotted an odd Green-winged Teal this morning. Body colour was wrong, but I've been fooled before. Then noticed there was no white bar on breast, but didn't seem to have the white stripe on scapulars either! At first seemed like a Eurasian "crecca"... but looking at the photos there seems to be a slight breast bar... My Nat. Geo. guide suggests its a hybrid? The duck in the lead is the odd ball in the first photo and the trailing duck in the second photo.

That's a tough one Wetlander, but my guess is that it's a very late plumaged male carolinensis. If you look closely at the breast you can see a hint of the white crescent starting to form. The hybrids I have seen (all two of them) tended to show characteristics of both forms i.e. a white crescent and a white scapular bar. Murray

Agreed! It hung around for a couple of days and with different looks, I could see the crescents coming in. The back was distracting, but it was simply dull brown immature plummage.

Those darn late moulters!!
Great learning to be had from watching it as it grows new feathers in though.
Keep watching, those Eurasians are around!
