The canals are alive with many variety of ducks, blue herons, eagles and hawks - some enjoying the snow more than others. This widgeon appears to have an extra white patch? Is that an Immature marking or could it be hybrid? thanks for helping with my endless curiousity and questions.

That is an adult male Am. Wigeon but I think he's just showing more of the white wing-patch than usual on a resting bird. Maybe he's in the middle of preening or just is holding his wings funny? Most happy to help! Curiosity and questions is what this site is all about. Keep them coming!! Also, an eye for such things is great as it's all learning more and more about our birds. It also leads to finding interesting birds too and finding such birds comes from seeing things abnormal (even if subtle). One day you'll photograph a Baikal Teal and cause all kinds of great excitement! ;D ;D
