Good day all I'm not 100% sure that it is a "Northern" ........Could it be either a loggerhead or brown shrike? My book tells me probably not, but there were no pictures of the juvies just adults. The only description given was that of the immature Northern, (which does describe it - hooked beak, barred underparts, brownish-grey head and faint eye mask), I just wanted to be 100% positive as it is my first Shrike So when in any doubt - ask the experts Sorry the pics are fuzzy butt shots, wish i were taller. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Neepgrin: It is a juvenile Northern Shrike. Congratulations on your first shrike sighting. If you had a Loggerhead, and, especially a Brown, you would be getting a lot of calls. Cheers, Thor

Thanks for posting, neepgrin. This is exactly what we encourage on this website. If you see something that you are unsure about, take a picture, post it, and we can all learn from it For some reason, I do not see juvenile Northern Shrikes that often either. Thanks Thor for the positive ID. You are right that Loggerhead or Brown would have caused a bit of excitement. Maybe neepgrin's next photo...... Dave

Hi Gord, sorry for delay in replying. The Shrike was seen on Gibson Rd on Dec 18/08 down by the eagle nest.
