WOW. Nice work Jukka. What an amazing looking bird!
I checked the site this morning before work and for some reason on the way, I stopped to carefully check a small flock of gulls huddled against the wind.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi all: Just recovering from a 21 hour birding day yesterday, spent chasing the above bird. Great find and stunning photographs, Jukka. Thanks, Len, for relaying them on this site. As described in my yahoo group reports, I saw this gull from the Surf Side RV Resort in Parksville. Four of us had caught the 6:30 ferry out of Horseshoe Bay to try and track down this North American rarity, based on two previous reports; one from Courtenay, and then the second from this area on Wednesday. There were a number of birders from the mainland, and Vancouver Island, who searched the area extensively on this day. Very unfortunately, it appears that I, and a local Nanaimo birder, were the only ones who saw the bird on this day. I noted all the distinguishing characteristics except for the fine red orbital ring, and, more importantly, the black band on the tail of the bird in flight. When the bird flew from the site, I was distracted by trying to notify another birder of its presence. I don't believe the bird was sighted today. Hopefully, it will be relocated by others. Cheers, Thor

Congrats Thor! Glad you got to see it. Thanks for posting the excellent photos, Len (and Jukka). Is this the beginning of another excellent BC gull year???

Mike Yip from the Island has some excellent photos of the Black-tailed Gull with imaginative captions. We loved his amazing photography and report. You can find them here: vancouverislandbirds.com/Journal270.html

Well, Len and your wife; you were great on Global TV news Dec -02; good work, you did us proud. Hope that you can get a copy of the video. Did you get a glimpse of that beautiful bird? Also, Thor, we agree that they should give Jukka some credit for the original sighting. Nice to see Thor in the paper as well.

Thanks for your kind words. We didn't find the gull : > ( I was taken by surprize by the reporter. He just walked up with the camera rolling and started to talk to me. I didn't realise it would be aired on the mainland.
