Getting the Gull fever. Starting to see more and more in the local fields, and driving home from Harrison after work, I see masses of Gulls flying back to the lake. Gulls are still a major stumbling block for me... And I hesitate to add to the work load for Gord... But didn't you mention a possible Gull Workshop this winter??? I would love to just spend a bit of time with some experienced gullers, to see what they see. Right now I'm just looking for too light (Glaucous etc.) or too dark (Western etc.) I read about field marks etc. in the guides, but out in the field, unless they are a nice little Mew, they all look like Glaucous-winged or hybrids!

Glad you brought this up! On Dec 16 when I present for the Christmas Bird Count meeting I will be having a section on identifying gulls. It wont be heavy but I think it will be useful in helping go to the next step and pick out Herring and Thayer's Gulls, juv Mew and Ring-billed Gull and so forth.
The field is the best way and Id love to drive around with a few persons to examine some flocks to apply some of the presentation on the real thing. This kind of weather is great as they're happily getting worms in the flooded fields. Let's not let this idea escape. Im certainly very keen!
