Spotted this guy out in the lagoon at Harrison. Caught a flash of red from the head and thought "Eurasian!!!" Got the scope on it and the body turned back into an "American", but the green stripe on the head looked black definately was showing red. After talking to Murray about it, I'm thinking a hybrid, perhaps with way more American than Eurasian. Any Duck experts out there care to comment?

Wetlander, now that I've seen the pics I believe this guy is a pure American. Many otherwise drab waterfowl can show a flash of irridesence if the sunlight strikes, just so. Including females.

Thanks for the id, murray. I see what your saying... Marion and I were freaked a few years ago by an oddly coloured kingfisher, after pouring over kingfisher photos, I figured that it must have been a trick of the light. Even Mallards can throw some weird colours, then look normal when they turn into the light.
