Hi, I am new to this type of messaging but I was wondering if anybody can help me identify a bird. It looked like a miniture owl. About 4-6"in length with a light coloured beak. It was sitting in the shrubs in my backyard eating a small sparrow (almost as big as itself). I have a few pics of it if someone can help me put them on this message board. Thanks

Hi and welcome Nana!! Sounds like you have described a Northern Pygmy-owl. Great sighting! They're a little different from typical owls as they like to hunt during the day (diurnal) and 'small' birds are a favorite! Would love to see your photos! If you click on the link below, it takes you through the steps. Be aware, photobucket has changed a little so my illustrations and what is there now are a little different. It still works the same though. www.bcbirding.proboards3.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=1096Another option is emailing them to me and I can do it too if easier. I can be emailed by clicking on the little email icon under my name and picture of that gull pinching bags of potato chips.
