This evening when driving to Abbotsford I noticed that the swan numbers in the field in Sumas Prairie is still about the same (500-600). I certainly feel that the numbers are higher over recent years. Do others share this feeling?
How about on the coast? Are the numbers up there as well or are we seeing birds that usually winter on the coast but are joining 'our' birds here instead for some reason.
I checked the Backyard Bird Count results for Delta and from 9 checklists I see 1,187 Trumpeter Swans (no Tundra!). That seems high to me so Im assuming that possibly there is some double (or triple...) counting taking place of the same birds. Dividing by 9 gives about 110 birds but it's hard to say how it's divided.

I see that the swans have left us until fall now. I could not find a one even though I drove past Sumas Prairie where they've been in huge numbers. Cheam Lake also had none.
I wish them well and continued success on their breeding grounds and that they have a safe flight up and back down!
