This afternoon on the way home from work I saw a huge flock of Cackling Geese in a field on Sumas Central. I pulled over to take some photos. I did not have time to count them there, I estimated numbers around 400, but took a series of photos to examine at home. I just finished counting necks and came up with 480! Not ONE was a Canada Goose! As I watched, a guy rode his bike by and they jumped up in a chorus of high-pitched honking to land further out. They were already a little jumpy as they were watching me.
A few pictures. You'll have to excuse the long photos. I wanted to give an idea of how many birds were out there. As I was leaving, a flock of about 60 came in and landed as well after what I thought was the main group had already landed. These might have been ones I already counted earlier but had flown further away before coming back to land. If not, then we're looking at closer to 550!!!
A close up
