Yesterday at noon in the bright sunshine we stopped for lunch at a power line right of way. Almost immediately I heard, first the tremolo call, and then the whistled toot, of a Northern Pygmy Owl. The bird was high up in a large Cottonwood, and to me seemed totally out of place. In less than a minute came the tooting of a second bird off in the distance. By the time we drove on we came to the conclusion that there may have even been three birds calling, although it's possible the second bird may have moved. This was approx. 5 kms. in from the highway on a logging road near Ruby Creek. The only other birds were a Ruffed Grouse and 3 Varied Thrushes.

Nice find! Those little owls pop up in the oddest places sometimes. More than one is always neat!
