After a casual but long search Ive finally found a notebook to replace my old birding journal notebook that's almost full and getting pretty beat up.
I was looking for something small, about 5"x8" with heavier paper pages and a hard cover to stand up to field use. I also was not interested in a 500 page deal either as it has to fit in my birding pack.
Yesterday at Coles I found the perfect thing. It's the big brother of the "Little Black Book" aptly named "Big Black Book". Goes for about $6 and Im very happy with it. Yes, it has a black cover.
If you're in the market for a birding journal for the field, I recommend this one. If you have not started to keep notes, I really encourage you to do so. It's amazing to see, looking back, what you've seen and when. If you're also so inclined, using it to sketch what you're looking at is also great. There is no better way, outside of looking at them all the time, to learn species and their fieldmarks than to sketch them as you watch them. I feel a lot of gull ID growth came when I started to sketch their fieldmarks. Sure helps remember who has (or is supposed to have...) this, that and the other fieldmarks! Also is a great way to document an uncommon species that you were not able to photograph.
