This morning, over at Eagle Point, I saw a flock of 20 or so birds flying at tree top level. There was one Red Wing Blackbird amongst them and these birds were definitely smaller than the Blackbird, but not 'small'. Their flight pattern was almost like that of a Woodpecker.....wings straight out, then clap straight to the side, glide with wings at the side, then repeat. They didn't do the 'dip' that Woodpeckers do. I am wondering if they could be the Crossbills that have been reported?

Interesting sight. I think Crossbills undulate (or dip) in flight but might be wrong. I might be off track, but Im thinking of birds that would flock with a Red-winged Blackbird (assuming they are flocking and not just a chance sharing of airspace between two dramatically different species) and Im wondering about Brown-headed Cowbird. That's a good sized flock of cowbirds though. Usually at this time of year they're mixed in with flocks of blackbirds and well outnumbered by them. Again though, Im not certain about their flight pattern. Ill be for sure looking for that next time I see them though. Always more to learn about!
