Hello all, I'm have just a beginner's knowledge of birding which is slowly growing. Here's a question for some of the more experienced birders. How often do migrating birds (geese in particular) travel at night? I live on Page rd. in Matsqui and often hear birds in flight late at night, honking and encouraging each other on. Do they simply take advantage of nice weather? Or, do I 'luck out' and hear the ones that do fly over?

Hi there! You're right, a lot of birds do travel at night. Sometimes you can even hear small birds such as thrushes, sparrows and warblers going overhead at night. This is usually during good weather though like you noted. Ive also heard geese going over in the dark making the higher pitched honks of a flock quite high up. Im not certain how common it is though. This would be the time as they're really moving around now. I saw several migrant flocks of Canada Geese today going over in the bit 'V' quite high up. One of the most certain signs of fall.

The other night I was awaken around midnight by the cackling of geese flying over our house. I just love that sound as I know Fall is here. ;D
