Hi all: Murray Brown, and I made a quick trip up to Manning Park yesterday, while his truck was being serviced. I was there last Saturday, and, then, again, with my wife, on October 1st. The difference between last Saturday, and now is quite dramatic. Birding activity seems to have decreased significantly. Not much in the way of migrants, except for the odd waterfowl. On October 1st, I saw Common Merganser, Clarke's Nutcracker, Grey Jay, and Dark-eyed Junco, in a stroll around the first Lightning Lake. Yesterday, Murray and I visited Strawberry Flats, a section of Lightning Lake, Beaver Pond, and the in-between stuff. On the water we saw Horned Grebe, Common Goldeneye, Ring-necked Duck and Mallard. Up on the flats we saw Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Flicker, Red-tailed Hawk, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Other birds observed; the usual Grey Jays, and Common Raven, as well as immature White-crowned Sparrows. We heard two different cadences of tapping-on-wood in the woods by the campground, but couldn't eyeball the actual birds. No sign of the juvenile Goshawk Murray had seen about a week ago. We spooked a good-sized Black bear while driving, and, of course, the fall colours are great. Cheers, Thor
