Hello Murray,
I have been reading your Northern Birding reports. My husband and I have decided that our big trip next year will be to the Yukon and possibly a jog into the N.W.T. as well (we have been there before) but don't intend to go into Alaska. We have a truck and travel trailer. I have a few questions for you.
Did you feel that 6 weeks was the right length of time? I see you left here on May 27th.....do you think leaving earlier in May would be reasonable? Do you have any words of advice? I went to the Yukon about 30 years ago when the Alaska highway was still gravel and I know that lots of spare tires were the order of the day but when we were in the NWT 3 years ago, although the roads were gravel, they were in excellent condition. We spent the first 2 weeks of June in the territories and it seemed about the right time although I think we could have been there a bit earlier. I assume gas stations and stores are still as far apart or non-existant as they used to be.
Planned route would be up the Stewart-Cassier with a side trip to stewart, then a side trip into Atlin, B.C., travel part way up the Dempster, then down the Alaska highway until we can turn north to Fort Laird (this is the route we did before), travel possibly to Fort Smith as both the Great Salt Plains and the Pelicans nesting on the Stave River are sights worth seeing again, then down into Northern Alberta and back into B.C. via Dawson Creek.

Kathy, I think the weather has to play a big role, in when to head north. Last summer the weather was pretty much sunny and dry throughout June, while it mostly rained here. I dont think mid May would be too soon to head out. Pretty well all the roads were good to reasonable we found, and we never had to carry extra gas. Just kept a sharp eye on the odometer and posted highway mileages. We did pretty much the reverse of your route but that sounds nice too. We felt we were ready for home after five weeks but it depends on how much time you want to stay at each spot.

Kathy, one thing I didn't think to mention was that the gas station that we used at Meziadin Junction three years ago was closed this summer. This caused me some anxious moments as I was counting on it in my calculations. Luckily it was all down-hill to Stewart from there and I rolled into town with at least 10 litres to spare! Have fun, and I look forward to hearing all about your northern adventure next mid-summer. Murray
