In the Agassiz fields just north of Hopyard Mtn. today, were three Merlins involved in some kind of altercation. What was particularly interesting to me was that they represented all the known colour forms. One was very dark and was a typical Pacific coast bird known as Suckleyi. The other two appeared to be Columbarius and Richardsoni with each being progressively lighter in colour. When they dispersed each bird headed off in a different direction apparently having no further interest in each other. I was astounded at how fast these birds can move when they are motivated. It's no wonder that they are able to catch birds such as swifts and swallows with very little effort. Murray

Wow Murray, talk about being in the right place at the right time! The Merlin we've seen around here a couple of times this year was a Columbarius I think.

Great to see three at once, amazing to see the different populations! What a treat.
I had one fly over my head yesterday and I thought of this report. It was a dark Pacific bird and boy, was it really moving!
