Today I ran into Bill Clark at Island 22 and we managed a little walk. We saw a good flock of Evening Grosbeaks, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, a good bird for that area, a female Bullock's Oriole, and several Western Tanagers and Warbling Vireos. A good sighting from along the river was of an adult Herring Gull that flew by close enough and long enough to get an ID on it. An uncommon bird for August. I think I have one from a similar date back in 2004. We also saw a young male Rufous Hummingbird on the dyke and a flyby Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Later in the day during my prowls I came across two juvenile Eastern Kingbirds, two juvenile Black-headed Grosbeaks and assorted little birds. I swore I heard a Least Flycatcher do a Che BEK a couple times. I looked and listened but did not see or hear anything else to confirm. However, I did find a neat sight of a female Lazuli Bunting feeding four little ones! I saw her feed them three times and each time it was a grasshopper. I dont know where the male was but I did not see him. Another later sighting of young birds still being fed! Hope to see them tomorrow as that will be a great September bird!
Baby
Busy mom!
As per custom, I checked the little pond down from my place. The morning was quiet but that seems to be typical. This evening there were 14 Killdeer, 8 Least Sandpipers, 1 Western Sandpiper and the highlight, an adult Semipalmated Plover. It's starting to get on for these guys migrating through, and an adult is even more interesting as they usually are gone first with the juveniles following a couple weeks later.
The wondering of what you'll see next makes every outing extra interesting!
