Yesterday, for the first time in awhile, I decided to run in an area that is more open, reflecting the change in temperature for comfortable summer running.
Consequently, I ran by Sucker Creek, and Thacker Marsh, and up Union Bar Road in Hope.
For those that haven't walked the Sucker Creek Trail in awhile, you will notice some significant changes.
I won't go into the reasons why the changes were made, but, now, if you park your car in the parking lot, and go for a walk to see birds, or otherwise, there is a connecting path between Union Bar Road, and the points where Thacker Marsh drains into Sucker Creek.
Despite some local criticism, I actually like the end result. The area is certainly more pedestrian friendly, and gives the observer a chance to see into the middle of the marsh. By installing boulders at the road end, no vehicles can access this path, and it looks like other rehabilitiation work has been done along the side of the marsh.
As far as impacting bird habitat, it looks to me like any impact will be minimal, and I expect to see all the breeding birds next spring, I saw this year.
I certainly encourage those from out of town to go for a walk around this site. I think they will enjoy it.
Good job FVRD-Parks.
As far as birds are concerned, it looks like ducks are starting to move. There was a pair of American Widgeon in the marsh yesterday. At my feeders, I am getting Evening Grosbeak, Black headed Grosbeak, American Goldfinch, House Finch, Black capped Chickadees, Steller Jays, Spotted Towhees, Red breasted Nuthatch. Osprey are flying up and down the river, sometimes with a fish in their talons. Many Vaux's Swift over the house last couple of days, and some Black Swifts, as well. Cheers, Thor
