Checked out Island 22 this afternoon. Over the Fraser at the main gate I checked out the swallow flock feeding. I saw at least three and maybe as many as five Bank Swallows among the numerous Barn and Violet-green Swallows. There were about 3 Tree Swallows, two Northern Rough-winged Swallows and a single Cliff Swallow as well to round out the swallows. I think this is the first time Ive seen all six together. A Purple Martin would have been a bonus.
In the woods it was very active similar to what Wetlander saw today. Nothing extraordinary but it was very worthwhile. Wilson's Warbler were most common followed by Yellow and Black-throated Grey Warblers. A big group of Western Tanagers were feeding in the same general area. A Black-headed Grosbeak was also close by here.
A flock of Canada Geese went over. I was alerted by a high pitched call among the lower honkings and spotted a Greater White-fronted Goose among the Canadas. A somewhat early record for that species for the area.
Every day is extra exciting birding now! Never know what will be seen.
