Hi All- I've been puzzling about the ID of this bird since Aug. 3rd when it showed up at our backyard feeder for one day only. Hopefully this visual image will help esp. with an Am. Goldfinch for scale. Thanks Deb

Deb: I'll wade in on this one, especially since you asked me about it on the trail the other day. I think you still have an American Goldfinch here- either an adult non-breeding female, or a juvenile. The buffy wing bars, white undertail coverts, and darker bill, are the features I focsed on. Don't know about the size differential. Cheers, Thor

Thanks Thor, thought you'd appreciate a photo rather than my feeble attempt to describe it "on the trail" which was, btw, very muddy today and I may have to invest in a fender! The second photo is a more accurate pic of the size difference when I first viewed it. I guess that's what threw me as well as the wing bars. Deb

Wow, that is certainly an eye catcher with the huge wing bars and edged primary and secondary wing feathers. Sure looks huge as well! It does look like an American Goldfinch juvenile to me as well but possibly fed food mixed with steroids! Good work capturing a photo too.
