This morning I was at Cheam Lake. It was very wet and miserable. However a little later I went to check on the lake to see what was out there. Through the droplets of water on my scope I was able to see four Red-necked Grebes, a Horned Grebe, four Cinnamon Teal, one Blue-winged Teal and about 15 Pied-billed Grebes. The grebes were nice to see. I also saw quite young Wood Ducks that were more down than feathers still.
In the trees, which were awfully hard to look for birds in as the rain drops made the leaves move like birds, it was pretty busy too. I counted about eight Red-eyed Vireos which is a good count for that species. There had to be about 15 Western Tanagers too. Six Eastern Kingbirds were still patrolling the lake edge. They'll probably be gone by the end of next week. Other than that, the general assortment of migrants. No waterthrush yet but Im still hopeful this will be the year!
