Been in the area around Thacker Park the last couple of days. There has been plenty of birdlife there. Yesterday there were lots of birds with their young. I enjoyed watching a family of Black-headed Grosbeaks and Black-throated Grey Warblers. A big Hairy Woodpecker was fun to watch working away at a rotted part of a tree. A Hooded Merganser, always an uncommon duck in the summer, was on the marsh. Today the highlight was the huge flock of easily 80 Band-tailed Pigeons. They came from the trail part, flew over the marsh and landed in the trees on the mountainside. Small flocks slowly made their way back over the next hour. It has been years since I have seen that many in one place. Where I grew up we would get big flocks in the spring at the hazel nut orchard.
