After we left Ft. Nelson I was still without two of my target birds, Cape May and Bay-breasted Warblers and my last realistic chance was Beaver Lake at km. 10 on the Old Liard Hwy. Although it too left me without those birds, I was pleasantly surprised to find a pair of Broad-winged Hawks racing me northward along the highway corridor around km. 15. Also of interest here, was a huge American Wood Bison lying on the shoulder of the road just chewing his cud. Up to this point we had seen primarily black bears, moose, deer and elk.
We camped at Liard Hot springs and enjoyed this beautiful, almost tropical area with it's strange plants, insects and lots of birds. The most notable of which were the Upland Sandpipers flying around early in the morning making their strange, Wolf-whistle calls.
There were many, many birds and mammals through the Yukon but one that sticks with me was when we arrived at Skagway, Alaska after driving south from Carcross. A Fork-tailed Storm Petrel flitting about through the huge cruise ships. Just a few meters from the dock!
We then took the ferry from Skagway to Haines Aka. as I wanted to drive that small portion of the highway that ran through British Columbia looking for those B.C. rarities that are found nowhere else.
