Hello birders,
Carolynn and I took a quick trip up to Armstrong for Carolynn's mom's birthday. On Saturday, we took a drive up Mt. Revelstoke. Because of the snow, we were unable to drive to the top, which worked out well, as on the walk up to the top, a beautiful Northern Goshawk graced the sky.
In Glacier NP, the only bird of note was a singing Northern Waterthrush.
On Sunday, we decided to drive home via Osoyoos along the Hope-Princeton HWY. It has been a long time since I birded this area and we did managed to see a number of the OK specialties. At White Lake, we had good looks at White-throated Swifts, Say's Phoebe, Lazuli Buntings, Brewer's Sparrow, and Mountain Bluebirds.
Our next stop was Vaseux Lake where we quickly spotted a number of Gray Catbirds. There was one Lewis' Woodpecker by the Vaseax Cliffs and I heard Rock and Canyon Wren as well.
We then ventured to Road 22 to walk along the Osoyoos Oxbows. Our main goal was Bobolink and we weren't to be disappointed. We counted seven birds in the newly conserved "Bobolink Meadows". Also in the area, we saw Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Bank Swallows.
Our last stop was along Nighthawk Road, which goes to the Chopaka Border crossing. We had wonderful scope views of a singing Sage Thrasher, as well as good looks at Western and Eastern Kingbirds, and Lark Sparrows.
On a side note, wildlife viewing was spectacular. On the way to Armstrong, we saw a huge Black Bear on the Coquahalla, two Moose between Merritt and Kamloops, one coyote, three Mountain Goats in Glacier NP, 14 Big Horn Sheep near Golden, many Mule Deer, Yellow-bellied Marmots, Columbian Ground Squirrels, Yellow-pine Chipmuncks, and the huge surprise, a huge cougar crossing the road near Golden. I am still getting goose bumps thinking about how big the thing was.
Cheers,
Brent Schmor
