Hello birders,
I had a nice surprise as I was walking on Morris Valley Road this evening. There were three White-winged Scoters in the very high Harrison River. The birds were located just past Tapadera Estates on the way to Hemlock Valley.

Surprise indeed! Excellent find! Males, females or both?
This is the first record I have, outside of historical records, for this species in our checklist area. Nice work!

Thanks Kevin. Gord, they were three females. I have heard of one other record for this species. I believe one was seen on a Christmas bird count in Abbotsford a few years ago.

Brent, if you find out any dates, let me know.
Nice sighting again. Females at this time of year is interesting. I might have expected males that have left after getting the family started.

Gord, Lynn Miller or Stan Olsen probably have the date of the WW Scoter sighting for the Abby-Mission bird count.
Sorry Gord, they were three males. Their overall coloration looked more brownish than the black I am used to seeing, but, as I now look in the guide, the males are the only ones that have the white tear drop by the eye. All three of these birds had the white tear drop.
