resulting from poor observation , but ,bigger than a warbler smaller than robin smooth olive body black head with white eyebar , brown on wings with white /black wingbars. got a brief glimpse up near Ross lake pines/grassy meadow. My apologies for the dumbass newbie question.

Hi Ziff I cant think of what it could be. What was it doing? Sometimes the bird's habits (on the ground, top of a tree etc) and what sounds it made can be very helpful narrowing the field. No need to apologise!

how about a white capped sparrow, markings are right on, i must have got the colour wrong.

I would certainly agree with the description and name now that you mention it! The habitat sounds right too.
Good work on the ID. Nice area you were hiking as well! Beautiful.
