Hi Trudi!
I think that's a Western Wood-Pewee. They are a flycatcher that likes to find a favorable perch to hunt from. They fly out to snag a flying insect and will return to the perch to watch for another. Most flycatcher species enjoy doing this.
This group of birds are challenging to tell apart. Their songs are different and they do also have discrete differences in plumage too. I've said Pewee based on the biggish bill, dark face, very faint eye ring and nice long wings. If you were to hear it call, it would make a "PREE-yurrrr!" ('PEE-wee!') sound.
Nice bird to find in your yard!
