General comments seem to reflect the scarcity of this species in the Western and Central Valley. In Hope, I see them regularly. We all know they migrate altitudinally. Hope, which enjoys ( !!?? ), the shadow affect of the Cascade Mountains, always keeps its snow longer than other parts of the Valley. Perhaps their presence, or lack of same, is directly attributable to local snow level conditions, assuming, of course, that they are in the general area, in the first place. We also get a fair number of Chestnut backed Chickadees at our feeders, and yet, they seem to be not as numerous as you head west. I have no theories on this one. At the airport today was a Downy Woodpecker, that I have seen consistently in the same tree-must be good food in there. Also a large flock of Rock Pigeons, a Bald Eagle, 2 Alaskan Song Sparrows, and 8-10 Juncos. I ran a little earlier today, so don't know if the Short Eared Owl continues. Cheers, Thor
