Today I came home and there, lying on the sidewalk beside my house, was a dead Western Tanager. I have no idea what killed it. It did not have any obvious wounds and aside from being dead it looked stunningly beautiful. I am wondering if it might have hit a window but and it seems unlikely since the window nearest the bird has a blind which was closed. I realize that birds do succumb at some point but this is the third bird I have found dead in a number of weeks, all without any clues as to the cause. We don't have a cat so that can be ruled out. What could have killed those birds? Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? onejay

Certainly something to monitor. Probably less likely it hit the window with the curtains down but perhaps the reflection was still there?
But also if someone's using poison or something that is something to worry about. What species have they been? If of a group who feed on similar food items or in similar niches it might raise a clue.

Western Tanager, Gold-crowned Sparrow Pine Siskin I believe the other one was a Junco but not certain...
We buy our bird seed in a reputable store in town and store it in containers which have a screw top. The seed does not get stored longer than a month at the most...I don't think there is a problem there...
Could lawn fertilizer, moss killer etc. kill birds? Other than that, I don't know of anything around my place that could hurt birds.
The more I think about it the more I think there must be a stray cat around or something...
On a more positive note, no dead birds today...(No Western Tanager either but oh well...)
