Looked like a Gadwall, but different. Possible Hybrid? Or am I just in rare bird mode... The head seems a little different to me, also much more chestnut on the sides than I'm used to. The Chestnut colour is what drew my eye.

After looking at whatbird and other internet sources, I guess this is just a male gadwall. For some reason I kept seeing some pintail in the mix. The chestnut on the side probably just fooled me.

Kev, meant to reply and forgot.
It looks like a Gadwall bodywise but there's something about the colouring I cant put my finger on. Were we in later summer Id say in moult, but not now!
I agree with you, there's something a bit funny about him. I dont see anything to say hybrid at this time though but that's always a possibility.

Thanks for the reference photos, that sure looks like him. I guess I'm just used to seeing Male Gadwalls showing a lot less wing colour. Usually I only see a tiny glimpse, and this guy was flashing like a Red-Winged Blackbird.
