Just wondering if there is any special action one is expected to take if a bird with leg bands is spotted. I happened to get a good look (and photo of a Red-tailed Hawk in my yard today, and noticed later it has been banded...

Terri, beautiful shot as always. I like the background...he fits in nicely!
As to the band, Im not sure about that. Canadian Wildlife Service would be my first stop to inquire about any recent banding programs. That's a juvenile so would have been banded last summer. On your original photo can you zoom in to read anything on the band? Were there any colour bands on the other leg that you can see? Often a colour coded band is used for distance viewing or to identify birds banded in a particular project or area.
I would contact the CWS and see where it goes from there. Even if you cant read the band, whoever banded it might be interested to hear about the sighting.
Let us know what you find out!
