I've just had a call from a customer who reported a possible Costa's Hummingbird in Abbotsford. I was not familiar with the appearance of a Costa's prior to the call, but afterwards I matched the description of a half-moon of purple feathers which protrude slight from the body, and a size slightly smaller than an Anna's to Sibley's, and it seemed like a very accurate description.
Would it be possible to have a Costa's this far north? Sibley's does have our range shaded in grey for very rare occurrence.

Hi Daniel,
I know of two records from BC since I have been birding. I was lucky enough to see a Costa's Hummingbird in Victoria about 10 years ago. I also chased one in Port Coquitlam a number of years ago as well without success. So there is a possiblility.

There is a little information on the Costa's here for our area. Im not certain about the second record. I think it was one that I intended to follow up on for dates etc. I think it was in Ryder Lake though. Daniel, keep us posted. There is no reason they're not getting a Costa's as that is one species that seems to 'overshoot' on migration. Brent, good grab on a hard to get species!

Daniel: A member of this listserve photographed a Costa's in the Victoria/Sooke area, I believe, last spring, so it is certainly within the realms of possibility, especially with Brent's Victoria sighting, and the Ryder Lake sighting. It would be interesting to know whether the bird is coming to an Abbotsford feeder, and whether the owners would welcome/tolerate other observers. This would definitely be, either a lifer, or B.C. bird for a lot of birders. Please keep us posted. Thanks. Thor

The Port Coquitlam Costa's was around for several days in June 1995, as I recall. I was fortunate enough to see it on June 5, 1995.
Male Costa's is pretty distinctive. and the description seems well based.
Birds of BC (vol. 2 [1990], p. 483) lists 5 accepted records from 1972 to 1987, four in southwestern BC and one inland. Dates range from mid April to early July.
Obviously, there are more recent records as well. So it's certainly possible.
It would be great to know the location if the observer is willing to have visitors.
