We popped into Harrison Lagoon today. It wasn't overly busy. Two late Bufflehead were there. Also a flock of California Gulls flew over. As usual for the date, they were young birds. The adults move on inland for breeding. We also had a great field observation of a Spotted Sandpiper. There were two working the shoreline when one flew up about 10 feet or so, deftly grabbed a large insect (possibly a large caddisfly) and returned to the ground and ate it. That's something I've not seen before although I have witnessed unlikely species flying out with purpose to grab a flying insect. A Chestnut-backed Chickadee did this and I've seen Song and White-crowned Sparrows fly out a few feet to snag a flying insect.
Yesterday morning at Island 22 the Yellow-breasted Chat was still singing out in the field. It was further away by the sounds of it and not singing as much. Possibly because it's found a female?
