Wondering if anyone can help, steer me in "some" direction where I can find information for my Sister, who lives just west of Prince George, quite close to Kluculz Lake? She began watching, in earnest, last year with the "onset" of Hummingbird season in her area, and has since shown an interest in feeders, feeding, during the fall/winter. She would like to know what types/variety of bird that she should try for. I know--I would just go ahead and put out feed and see what shows up--however I would like to be able to find out what she should be able to expect to see--Gord, you have mentioned in the past that you are familiar with that area--is there a "guide" that fairly well represents that area?--Would be grateful for all/any help/input---Al

Al, Ive been in the area in the fall only. Id bet she could expect a good variety of chickadees minus chestnut-backeds. I remember red-breasted nuthatches as well. Pine grosbeaks, crossbills, redpolls and probably pine siskens as well would be expected. Sparrow wise, I dont know if there's too much during the winter save for juncos. Steller's Jay and certain Gray Jay should be expected. I remember Three-toed Woodpecker and I think Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers as well suggesting some suet would be well received.
Id put out sunflower for certain as well as niger for the siskens and redpolls. Some peanuts would make the jays very happy.
I hope others have more ideas or more in depth knowledge to share too.
Keep us posted on how things work out! Id love to hear what happens. Beautiful country up there.

Al: I would suggest your sister contact Sandra Kinsey, and/or Laird Law; ( same e-mail address ). You can contact me privately for the e-mail address if you think it would be of use. Sandra and Laird live in Prince George. Sandra is the past president of the B.C. Ornithologists Organization. She is very helpful, and I am sure would be happy to pass on some advice to a new Prince George birder. There used to a Yahoo birding group serving B.C.'s north, and it may still be in existence. I can't find the url address, but Sandra would know it. If I was putting up a feeder there I would sure be looking for Redpolls, and hoping, especially, for a Hoary. Northern Hawk Owls should be fairly easy to find in the woods around her property. Also, if I was living there right now, I would be chasing that Ross's Gull on Tachick Lake near Vanderhoof. Cheers, Thor
