Thought I would start a new thread with this as the 'New Yard Challange' one is getting a bit long.
It is a miserable wet cold day today, but even so, I can add 2 new species to the 'Yard' list.
#27 was a female Calliope Hummingbird (I already reported her for the April list). There was a female Rufous at the feeder at the same time so the ID was obvious although it seems early for a Calliope, especially a female.
#28 was spotted just after lunch....a Lincoln Sparrow. He was out there with the 2 resident White Crowned Sparrows and a Song Sparrow.
So that isn't bad....in 5 1/2 months we are up to 28 species in my little tiny space. I only count what is actually in the yard so things like the Tree Swallows that fly about over head haven't been counted. I have to get a bird house up...then, if they visited it, I'd count them as well.

#29 arrived this morning....Brown Headed Cowbirds. Not the most welcome of the summer visitors, but a sign that spring is progressing (supposedly! sure can't prove it by the weather!!!)
Then when we were coming back from our morning walk a #30 was a Townsend's Solitaire sitting in the ornamental flowering cherry tree at the front of our place....I figure that is close enough to count!

I have real mixed feelings when I see the cowbirds as well. Congrats on the Solitaire!!!

#31.....all winter I watched and watched for a Fox Sparrow...now, finally, I have a Fox Sparrow. He's been here the last 3 days. The Lincoln is around still too, as are a few White Crowned. Don't see the Song Sparrows much lately, suspect they are nesting somewhere (I understand they are 'early nesters'). Now I'm waiting for a Gold Crown to show up. Saw one over by my 'old' yard yesterday...but he hasn't made it to my 'new' yard yet.

#32 showed up today and not one I would hav thought I'd get....a Swainson's Thrush. Have been thinking the last week or so that we should be hearing them soon, then saw that they had been sighted at Kilby yesterday, then this morning I saw one on our morning walk, and when we came home from our mid day walk....there, sitting on the wrought iron fence right against the cedar hedge....was one in my own yard! Stopped, got the camera turned on, but before the camera was ready it flew up into one of the cedar treees and although I have been checking the yard every few minutes ever since, not likely to spot it again. We are over run with Evening Grosbeaks at the moment....counted 32 in a tree over at Eagle Point this morning and there are 6 or 8 at the feeder right outside my window as I type this. In fact I have gone through 2 ice cream bucketfuls of bird seed today and that isn't counting what is in the tube feeder and the nyger feeders. And I was worried I wouldn't get birds over here!! Ha!

Love hearing how things are doing there, Kathy! I know how big your yard is and 33 species in the short time you've been there is excellent! This year you'll get that Hooded Oriole back I bet.

Can add two more (Sorry Gord...no Hooded Oriole yet...no Bullock's yet either but I'm hoping!)
#34 was a Yellow Rumped Warbler (Audubon)....it was in the Broad Leaf Maple and #35 was a White Throated Sparrow seen this morning. By the way had 21 White Crowned and 4 Gold Crowned as well.
I really do miss my Cascara Trees and my Crab Apple Tree about now as they used to attract all the different Warblers....but I guess the Broad Leaf Maple is doing a pretty good job. Have to get a water feature going pretty quick so that I'll be able to lure a Western Tanager! not that I've seen any over here yet.

#38....finally....one of the many Bullock's Orioles found me. Went to the hummingbird feeder at first and then spotted the Oriole feeder on the shed. Unfortunately, since I'm off to Alberta for 3 weeks as of tomorrow....he'll have to re find me when we return. Now if only some of the Swallows that are dipping and diving all over the park would just spot the nest box on the back fence I'd be able to add them....so far they seem oblivious!

Finally!!! another species. #39 - a Red Breasted Nuthatch at the feeder this morning. Have been hearing them in the general area, off and on for weeks. Was just sitting here at my computer when one landed in the feeder right outside my window.

It's been a long time coming but #40 showed up just now. Finally, a Chestnutback Chickadee. I think there were at least two. It was a mixed flock with Black Caps and Nuthatch
This is the first Chestnutback Chickadee I have seen around here in pretty much a year and a half! Normally, there are more of them than Black Caps, at least in this area.

Hi Kathy- Interesting -that has been our observation here as well. We've always had a good size population of Chestnut-backed chickadees but, this year, they arrived later and we've only seen two so far in the flock comprised of Black-capped and nuthatches.
